How to Play Country Draft
Country Draft is a free geography game and blind ranking game. You draw eight random countries, place each one in a category, and find out how your nation ranks among 120 countries. This guide covers the rules, scoring, categories, tiers and what a good score looks like.
What is Country Draft?
Country Draft is a free country ranking game that runs in your browser, with no download and no account. It works like a draft where the countries are the players and the categories are the roster spots. You see a country first and learn its world rank only after you commit, which is why we call it a blind ranking.
How to play Country Draft
- Spin. Press Spin to draw a random country.
- Assign it. Put the country in the category where you think it ranks highest in the world. Each category takes one country, and a pick is final once you place it.
- Use rerolls when you're stuck. You get 3 rerolls per game for draws that don't fit any open slot.
- Reveal your nation. Fill all eight categories to see your score and tier, then share the result or play again.
What blind ranking means
You see the country, but not where it ranks in any category until you commit. Once you place it, the game shows its world rank, such as "#12 of 120". That is the whole tension: a country that looks great for GDP might be nowhere near the top, and you can't take the pick back.
Country Draft categories
| Category | What it measures | Ranks #1 |
|---|---|---|
| Population | People living in the country | Most people |
| GDP | Total value of goods and services produced in a year | Highest GDP |
| Fresh Water Resources | Fresh water in rivers, lakes and groundwater each year | Most fresh water |
| Land Area | Total size of the country's land | Largest area |
| Population Density | People per square kilometer | Most crowded |
| Annual Tourists | Tourists who visit in a year | Most visitors |
| Life Expectancy | Average number of years people live | Longest life expectancy |
| FIFA Ranking | Rank of the men's national football team | Best team, the lowest number |
Two categories trip people up. Population Density counts crowded places as high, so small, packed countries can rank well and large, empty ones rank poorly. FIFA Ranking works the other way around: the best team has the lowest number, and that is what counts as #1.
How Country Draft scoring works
Each pick earns points based on its world rank in that category: 100 points for #1, 1 point for #120, with a straight line in between. Your final score is the average of your eight picks, from 0 to 100, and it decides your tier.
Here is a worked example. Say your eight picks land at these ranks:
| World rank | Points |
|---|---|
| #3 | 98 |
| #12 | 91 |
| #25 | 80 |
| #40 | 68 |
| #55 | 55 |
| #70 | 43 |
| #90 | 26 |
| #110 | 9 |
The points average out to 470/8 = 58.75, which rounds to 59. That lands in the Balanced Republic tier.
Country Draft tiers
| Score | Tier |
|---|---|
| 0 to 9 | Back to the Drawing Board |
| 10 to 19 | Nation Under Construction |
| 20 to 34 | Scrappy Startup State |
| 35 to 49 | Underdog Nation |
| 50 to 64 | Balanced Republic |
| 65 to 74 | Regional Powerhouse |
| 75 to 84 | Rising Power |
| 85 to 94 | Global Empire |
| 95 to 100 | Superpower Status |
What is a good score?
We simulated 20,000 games with the game's own data to see what scores are realistic. Real players don't know every rank, so treat these numbers as ceilings.
| How the game is played | Average score | Reaches 75 or more |
|---|---|---|
| Countries placed at random | 51 | 1% |
| Every rank known, each country put in its best open category | 73 | 41% |
| Same, with rerolls used on weak draws | 79 | 77% |
A score of 75 or more puts you in Rising Power or above, which is a strong game. Global Empire (85 and up) showed up in about 14% of the simulated games that used rerolls well. Superpower Status (95 and up) almost never happened, even with perfect knowledge, because it takes an average world rank of about #7 across all eight categories.
Tips for a higher score
- Reroll weak draws. In our simulation, rerolling any draw whose best open slot was worth less than 45 points lifted the average from 73 to 79.
- A bad draw is usually a bad fit, not a bad country. 107 of the 120 countries rank in the top 40 in at least one category, and only 3 have no category inside the top 60. If nothing fits your open slots, that is what rerolls are for.
- Watch the two reversed categories. Population Density rewards crowded places, and FIFA Ranking rewards the lowest number.
Questions
Is Country Draft free?
Yes. It runs in your browser, with no download and no account.
Can I play Country Draft on my phone?
Yes. It works on phones, tablets and desktop browsers, and you can share your result as an image.
Is there a daily Country Draft puzzle?
No. Every game is a fresh random draw, so you can play again as often as you like.
How many countries are in Country Draft?
120. Each category ranks all 120 of them, from #1 to #120. You won't see the same country twice in one game.
What does blind ranking mean?
You see which country you drew, but not where it ranks in a category until you lock it in. After you place it, the game shows its world rank, for example "#12 of 120".
Is this the game where you draft famous people?
No. Some games with similar names have you draft famous people into government roles. In Country Draft you draft whole countries, and the score comes from real country statistics such as population, GDP and life expectancy.
Is it about the military draft?
No. Here the draft means picking countries, as in a sports draft. Nothing in the game involves conscription.
Ready for your first draft?
It takes a couple of minutes. Spin, place eight countries and see which tier your nation lands in.
